Hello all,

I drove steam locomotives on the Harz narrow gauge railway for 31 years before I retired. Since some of you asked about visiting, here are my personal tips.

Best time to go
Late September and October. The leaves turn, the trains are less crowded and the light is wonderful in the afternoon.

Which trains to ride
Take the train from Wernigerode to the Brocken at least once. If you have time, ride the Selketal line as well. It is much quieter and you still get real steam.

For photographers
The curves near Drei Annen Hohne and the climb after Schierke are great spots. Please stay behind the fences, the drivers will thank you.

Happy to answer any questions!
Karl

Great tips, Karl! I can add one spot: the bridge at Steinerne Renne in the morning. Bring a longer lens and be there about 20 minutes before the train, the good places fill up quickly.

Thank you, Karl! Is it worth taking the night train to the Brocken in winter? I have seen photos of it and they look magical.

Liebe Grüße vom Bodensee
